The Black-Robed Madonna

This brief passage by Ryunosuke Akutagawa takes the form of a Christian prayer addressed to the Virgin Mary. Its imagery of humanity groaning and weeping in a “valley of tears,” then appealing to Mary’s compassion, echoes the medieval Catholic antiphon known as the Salve Regina. The language is solemn and devotional, combining suffering with trust in a merciful maternal presence. Akutagawa preserves the elevated cadence of prayer through repeated appeals and reverential forms of address, while the final attribution presents the passage as a translation from a text identified as “Querendo.” Though only a fragment, it evokes the atmosphere suggested by the title: a sacred, mysterious Madonna clothed in darkness, before whom human sorrow seeks consolation.
